Family Visas for New Zealand: Reunite with Your Loved Ones

If you’re looking to join your family members in New Zealand, there are several visa options available depending on your relationship with them. Here’s an overview of the pathways you can explore:

Partner of a New Zealand Citizen or Resident

If you’re in a genuine and stable relationship with a New Zealand citizen or resident, you may qualify for a partnership-based visa. This could be a visitor or work visa, and if you’ve been living together for at least 12 months, you might be eligible for a partnership residence visa.

Dependent Child

Dependent children of New Zealand citizens or residents can apply for a visitor or resident visa to join their parents in New Zealand. If one parent is permanently living in New Zealand, your child may also be eligible for a student visa if a residence application is in process. The definition of “dependent” varies based on the child’s age and the type of visa.

Parents of New Zealand Citizens or Residents

  1. Parent and Grandparent Visitor Visa: This visa allows you to visit New Zealand multiple times over a 3-year period, staying up to 6 months per visit.
  2. Parent Category Residence Visa: If your child lives permanently in New Zealand and their income is sufficient, you may submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) under the Parent Category. Note that this EOI is subject to a quarterly ballot draw with 500 applicants selected each year, so there’s no guarantee of selection.
  3. Parent Retirement Category Residence Visa: If you have an annual income of at least NZD $60,000, assets of NZD $1.5 million, and can transfer and invest NZD $1 million in New Zealand for 4 years, you might be eligible for this residence category.
